Although it would be great to have all of your videos professionally produced sometimes you have to do it yourself. Everyone has a level playing field as most people have a great camera in their pocket but this one thing could take your videos to the next level. Visuals vs. Audio
When making videos we all understandably concentrate on the quality of the picture but how much thought have you given to the audio?
There is a saying in the film business, audio is 50% of a film. This basically means that your image can look amazing but it your sound is rubbish then it is going to take people out of the experience and negatively affect their enjoyment.
Without knowing it, your bad audio could be causing your viewers to click off of your video.
Not so Hi-FI
So why is your audio bad? It’s to do with the microphone in your phone/camera. Although it is okay overall, if you are trying to record speech it will also pick up the echoey sound of the room, the dogs barking in the background, the traffic outside of your window, the wind rushing past or people having a loud conversation. This is because the microphone is too far away from the source you are trying to record, your mouth.
How can you fix this? By using an external mic like a lavalier microphone also known as a tie clip mic. The one featured in the video is a Rode Smart Lav which can be picked up for about £50. Although you can find cheaper ones, just remember that the sound quality will go down the less you pay. It can plug directly in to the bottom of your phone, you then want to clip the microphone as close to you mouth as possible. If you want to hear the difference just watch the video above.
That’s A Wrap
So to wrap up, most of the self made videos online have terrible sound as they use the mics on their phone or camera, which although are okay also let in a lot of other noise making your audio distracting and your voice hard to hear.
To fix this, invest in a lavalier microphone and make your videos stand out.
